Situated at 1430 metres, the pine-clad hill station of Taunggyi provides a cool break from the heat of the plains. Capital of the Shan State, the town set at 1400m and 28km northeast of Inle Lake. Taunggyi is close to many places of interest that will tempt the travellers, such as the scenic hill station of Kalaw and the magnificent Pindaya Caves famous for thousands of ancient Buddha images. For those interested in the Shan State’s cultures, the modest Shan State Museum and Shan State Library near the Taunggyi Hotel are worth a visit. There’s a cheroot factory called Flying Tiger Mashua on a side street south of the Myodaw Cinema. The handrolling technique is impressive, and ciger bundlers are able to bunch 50 cigers in bundles.
