Third capital and fourth largest city of Myanmar, 270 km southeast of
Yangon, unique for its cultural and scenic setting, which is really
something out of the ordinary. Here is a Golden pagoda built on a
Golden boulder that is precariously balanced on the edge of a cliff, as
if about to fall off, known as the Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda, is thronged by
devotees and pilgrims from all over, and there are as many legends said
of this unique pagoda, the sight of which alone is worth seeing.
Mawlamyaing is located in the Mon State, where the Mon language is
widely spoken. Echoes of the town’s thriving past are still present in
the beautiful old colonial buildings. Among the other attractions, the
scenic view is enhanced by the fast moving Than-lwin(Salween) River
surrounded by many small islands leading out to sea, where on a clear
day one can see the Andaman Sea. The city is also renowned for its
seafood and beautiful pagodas. |
