A sheet of blue glass water at 900m above sea level, with its own native inhabitants, the INTHA people who live on stilted homes built on the lake with their stunning floating gardens, floating markets, floating villages, The boulder and the cliff are two separate pieces and they barely touch each other. From KIN PUN camp, a steep and rough 11 km road leads to the upper stagging point, a journey made in open truck, and then hiking up steep paths which approx: 4km to the “Golden Rock”. Sedan chairs, carried by four men are for rent for the wearier travellers. The atmosphere surrounding Kyaiktiyo during the height of the pilgrimage season, November to March, is charged with magic and devotion, especially when the glinting boulder is bathed in the purple, sometimes misty light of dawn. Pilgrims chant, light candles and meditate all through the night.
